Verdict first
Osmo Action 5 Pro remains the fit when its 1/1.3-inch sensor, 64 GB built-in storage with 47 GB available, 4K/120 and established action-camera workflow meet the need. Osmo Action 6 is the considered upgrade when its 1/1.1-inch sensor, f/2.0-f/4.0 variable aperture and 64 GB storage with 50 GB available change the intended camera work. Both list the same baseline waterproof depth without the case, so the decision is not simply 'newer equals more waterproof.'

Choose by the work you actually need to do
Osmo Action 5 Pro
For a proven action-camera route with 1/1.3-inch sensor, 146 g published weight, 4K/120, 47 GB usable internal storage and a broad existing accessory workflow.
Osmo Action 6
For a camera kit that specifically benefits from the 1/1.1-inch sensor, variable f/2.0-f/4.0 aperture, 149 g published weight and 50 GB usable internal storage.

Choose the recording mode and editing route together
Action 6 records 8K at up to 30 fps in 16:9. DJI added 8K video in firmware 01.02.05.21 on 23 December 2025, so confirm the installed firmware and available recording options on a pre-owned unit. In 8K, stabilization is limited to RockSteady or RockSteady+; Film Tone and Quality Priority are unavailable. See the current recording specifications and firmware release notes.
For square footage to crop later, Action 6 offers 3840 x 3840 4K Custom up to 60 fps. For 4K HorizonSteady, use 16:9 or 4K Custom at 60 fps or below. If your plan is to download and edit 8K directly in DJI Mimo, DJI currently limits that workflow to iPhone 15 Pro series and later models. Check the phone and app you will actually use before making 8K the reason to upgrade.
Variable aperture is the Action 6 decision point
The most specific Action 6 difference in DJI's official current specification is its 1/1.1-inch sensor and f/2.0-f/4.0 variable aperture. That is a reason to consider Action 6 when exposure control and the lens behaviour are central to a planned production workflow. It is not a reason to claim that every Action 6 clip will be better than every Action 5 Pro clip.
Action 5 Pro lists a 1/1.3-inch sensor and fixed f/2.8 aperture. It is still a serious option for action, travel and kit-based shooting, especially when the buyer already owns suitable accessories and the exact unit is complete and clean.
Waterproof claims require the same discipline as drone claims
DJI lists both cameras for up to 20 m without the Waterproof Case and up to 60 m with the case, subject to the stated closure and product conditions. That means Action 6 is not a shortcut to a broader waterproof claim. Before underwater use, check seals, battery compartment and USB-C cover condition, lens-cover condition and the exact case supplied.
The Action 6 manual specifically warns that the product is not waterproof with the Osmo Action 6 Macro Lens. A used-kit seller should name any lens or accessory fitted to the camera rather than letting a general action-camera label imply an unsupported configuration.
Accessories and storage are part of the camera decision
The available internal storage differs slightly: Action 5 Pro lists 47 GB available and Action 6 lists 50 GB available from the same nominal 64 GB. Both support microSD storage under DJI's documented conditions. For high-volume shooting, the condition and speed class of the supplied card may matter as much as the small internal-storage difference.
An Action 5 Pro owner can keep the Osmo Action Extreme Battery Plus (1950 mAh) and Multifunctional Battery Case 2 for Action 6. Confirm those exact accessory names and the condition of each battery when comparing the total kit cost.
The camera-side mounting clip changes: DJI marks the original Osmo Action Quick-Release Adapter Mount as incompatible with Action 6. Action 6 uses the Osmo Dual-Direction Quick-Release Adapter Mount, which is not compatible with Action 5 Pro. Check whether the selected Action 6 package includes it, and verify any existing base or other fitted accessory against DJI's accessory compatibility list.
Before buying a pre-owned kit
Inspect the lens protective cover, side covers, battery compartment, USB-C cover, quick-release slots, screens and microphone/heat-dissipation openings. Water history should never be inferred from a clean front photo.
Assess the camera as a sealed working kit
For an action camera, the decisive inspection is often not visible in a headline specification. Check the lens protective cover, front and rear screens, battery-door and USB-C closure, quick-release connection, microphone openings, heat-dissipation areas and any waterproof case supplied. A clean product image alone does not establish how a previously owned camera or its seals have been treated.
Then compare the complete kit to the work plan: battery count, charger, mounting hardware, protective covers, memory-card route and the editing format required. The documented sensor and aperture differences help narrow the correct camera route, but the selected camera's condition and included components determine whether it is ready for the intended day of shooting.
Specification basis

See DJI's Osmo Action 5 Pro specifications and Osmo Action 6 specifications for the public first-party record; product condition and included accessories must still be verified for the exact item.
Recording and accessory details checked 3 October 2026 using the current specifications, Action 6 FAQ, DJI release notes including the 23 December 2025 8K update and Osmo accessory compatibility matrix. These are manufacturer specifications and compatibility records, not a Reboot Hub comparative recording or waterproof test.
This guide compares the named models only. Reboot Hub does not transfer a camera, sensor, controller, battery, or compatibility claim from a neighbouring model. Product availability, included items, condition, firmware and regional rules must be verified for the exact unit before checkout or flight.
Questions buyers ask
What is the clearest documented Action 6 upgrade?
Action 6 lists a 1/1.1-inch sensor and a variable f/2.0-f/4.0 aperture, while Action 5 Pro lists a 1/1.3-inch sensor and f/2.8 lens. Whether that matters depends on the planned shooting workflow.
Are both cameras waterproof to the same published depth?
DJI lists both for 20 m without the Waterproof Case and 60 m with the case under stated conditions. Covers, seals, the exact accessory and inspection state still matter.
Can I use an Action 6 Macro Lens underwater?
No. The Action 6 manual says the product is not waterproof when used with the Osmo Action 6 Macro Lens.
