Dubai Drone Map & Wedding Filming: Permissions to Check

Check operational status before planning the route

GCAA Safety Decision 2026-03, Issue 03, dated 27 April 2026, suspended commercial and recreational drone operations and their approvals. It provides for operations specifically exempted through written GCAA authorisation and says the decision may subsequently be amended or cancelled.

That dated document is not, by itself, a verified statement of today's approval status. Our review did not establish an official, universally applicable restoration of drone permissions. Ask GCAA and DCAA which current notice applies to your operation, including any exemption or reinstatement. Do not infer that an old approval has become valid again because a booking website, airline timetable or unrelated aviation activity is operating.

For a wedding contract, make the aerial portion conditional on the required approvals. Agree on a ground-camera alternative before taking a non-refundable commitment for drone footage. This is our planning recommendation, not a promise that any particular permit can be obtained.

Use the official Dubai drone map for the exact site

Open the DCAA Dubai Drone Map and check the actual launch point and intended route, not only the landmark appearing in the background. A photograph of Burj Khalifa could be taken from many locations; the landmark name does not identify the airspace occupied by the aircraft.

The map is an official location-checking resource. We have not reproduced its current boundaries here or designated any park, rooftop, beach or desert location as approved. If its interactive layers do not load, do not substitute an old screenshot. Ask DCAA to confirm the location using coordinates.

Dubai's Law No. 4 of 2020, Article 32, requires prior DCAA permission, operation within the approved area and routes, and approval for danger or restricted areas. It prohibits operations and operation tests in prohibited areas. Those distinctions matter: a restricted area and a prohibited area are not interchangeable labels.

• Identify the site: record the venue address, launch coordinates and intended filming direction.
• Describe the operation: specify the date, local time, aircraft, pilot and planned flight envelope when asking for guidance.
• Resolve uncertainty: obtain clarification where map layers, notices and approval documents appear inconsistent.
• Retain the answer: keep the authority's response and document version with the production file. A map capture records what you checked; it does not replace authorisation.

Separate the approvals for wedding filming

The GCAA UAS registration guidance distinguishes individual recreational users from organisations undertaking professional or special operations, including photography. It states that obtaining an Unmanned Aircraft Operator Authorisation does not itself authorise a flight, and identifies separate operational and security-clearance requirements. Use that distinction when questioning a proposed filming operator; confirm the current application route with the authority rather than treating the general service page as approval.

The DCAA aerial-filming service is the local contact route for the aviation side of the shoot. Ask what additional filming, property and event permissions are necessary for your proposal. This guide does not assert that one application covers them all or guarantee a processing time, fee or outcome.

A practical brief for the operator and venue

Prepare one consistent brief before requesting quotes. It reduces the chance that the venue approves one idea while the operator prices a different route. Include these production questions, then let the responsible operator determine the compliant plan:

1. What is the essential shot? Describe the framing and delivery format. Decide whether a ground camera or licensed existing footage would meet the same need.
2. Where will people be? Mark guest areas, staff routes, entrances and emergency access. Do not assume wedding guests are a controlled film crew.
3. What changes after sunset? Tell the operator if the requested sequence depends on evening lighting, rather than allowing a daylight proposal to imply approval for a night shoot.
4. Who owns each decision? Name the operator, venue contact and producer who can cancel the aerial sequence when conditions or permissions are unsuitable.
5. What happens if the plan changes? A different terrace, time slot, aircraft or guest layout should be reviewed against the actual approval, not casually substituted on the day.

DJI FlySafe is advisory, not legal clearance

DJI's 17 November 2025 global GEO announcement describes reclassifying remaining No-Fly Zones as Enhanced Warning Zones and retiring the GEO Unlock Request service in early 2026. It explicitly distinguishes its advisory information from official aviation-authority airspace data.

Do not rely on an older guide that says every restricted location will prevent takeoff or require the same manufacturer-unlock procedure. Behaviour can depend on the aircraft and its software. A drone that can start its motors is not proof of a permitted flight, and acknowledging an app warning is not an aviation approval.

Other locations need their own assessment

Dubai Marina property photography: give the operator the exact building and proposed viewpoint. A neighbouring tower's previous shoot is not evidence for your address. Coordinate ground access with building management without confusing that access with airspace permission.

Parks and family outings: this guide does not recommend Al Barsha Pond Park, Mushrif Park or any other location as a verified recreational flying site. Check the current activity status, official map and land-manager requirements before planning a launch.

Power lines and emirate boundaries: we do not infer a legal exclusion radius from the mere visibility of a transmission line. Physical clearance and airspace permission are separate questions. A Dubai approval should not be treated as permission for a different operation in Sharjah or Abu Dhabi.

Choose the equipment after the filming route is viable

A smaller or pre-owned drone is not a substitute for the operational checks above. Before buying a kit for one event, give the proposed operator the exact aircraft and controller details and ask whether they are suitable for the approved production plan.
