The camera difference is the real dividing line
Both aircraft can record 4K at up to 30 frames per second, so a comparison that stops at the 4K label misses the useful distinction. Mini 4K's manual lists a 1/2.3-inch, 12 MP sensor. Mini 3's parameter register lists a 1/1.3-inch, 48 MP sensor. That does not make one result automatically better in every scene, but it is a real reason to choose Mini 3 when still-image flexibility, crop latitude and the camera itself matter to the buyer.
Conversely, do not pay for Mini 3 simply because it is newer if the plan is occasional daylight holiday footage. A carefully checked Mini 4K may be the more coherent purchase when its condition, battery health, controller and included accessories are stronger than an incomplete Mini 3 listing.
Flight time is a reference figure, not a promise
DJI publishes 31 minutes for Mini 4K and 38 minutes for Mini 3 with the standard Intelligent Flight Battery under specific windless test conditions. Those figures are useful for comparing the two published baselines, but they are not a guarantee for a pre-owned battery, cold weather, wind, a heavier accessory load or an older firmware state.
For a used purchase, ask for the number and condition of batteries, a photograph of the battery indicators, the exact charger or hub included, and any evidence of swelling, impact or storage damage. A bundle with a healthy additional battery can be more useful than a paper advantage in maximum flight-time figures.
What to check in the listing before the camera
The controller is part of the system. Mini 4K's manual identifies RC-N1 or RC-N1C controller variants, while Mini 3 packages can vary. Confirm the aircraft, controller, cable set, charger, battery model and propellers shown in the actual listing; do not infer them from a stock product photo.
Then inspect the gimbal, arms, landing points, shell seams, propeller mounts, lens surface and SD-card slot. A test flight or functional record is more valuable than a generic claim that a drone is 'like new'.
A Mini 4K kit has its own evidence trail
Mini 4K's Appendix lists a 2250 mAh Intelligent Flight Battery and a 100 Mbps maximum video bitrate. Its camera section lists JPEG/DNG (RAW) image capture and microSD-card requirements rather than a large internal-storage figure. Those details help a first buyer ask sensible questions about the actual card, the supplied charger and the handling of original files.
The Mini 4K manual also distinguishes RC-N1 and RC-N1C controller variants. Record the controller model on the invoice or evaluation sheet, photograph the cables and check a normal device connection. This is more useful than declaring that a generic 'DJI remote' is included.
Before buying a pre-owned kit
For Mini 4K, confirm that the controller shown is the controller delivered and that it links normally to the aircraft. For Mini 3, verify the exact battery type because published flight-time figures vary by battery configuration and regional availability.
