Decision summary
Osmo Action 5 Pro remains the fit when its 1/1.3-inch sensor, 64 GB built-in storage with 47 GB available, 4K/120 and established action-camera workflow meet the need. Osmo Action 6 is the considered upgrade when its 1/1.1-inch sensor, f/2.0-f/4.0 variable aperture and 64 GB storage with 50 GB available change the intended camera work. Both list the same baseline waterproof depth without the case, so the decision is not simply 'newer equals more waterproof.'
Choose by the work you actually need to do
Osmo Action 5 Pro
For a proven action-camera route with 1/1.3-inch sensor, 146 g published weight, 4K/120, 47 GB usable internal storage and a broad existing accessory workflow.
Osmo Action 6
For a camera kit that specifically benefits from the 1/1.1-inch sensor, variable f/2.0-f/4.0 aperture, 149 g published weight and 50 GB usable internal storage.

Variable aperture is the Action 6 decision point
The most specific Action 6 difference in DJI's official current specification is its 1/1.1-inch sensor and f/2.0-f/4.0 variable aperture. That is a reason to consider Action 6 when exposure control and the lens behaviour are central to a planned production workflow. It is not a reason to claim that every Action 6 clip will be better than every Action 5 Pro clip.
Action 5 Pro lists a 1/1.3-inch sensor and fixed f/2.8 aperture. It is still a serious option for action, travel and kit-based shooting, especially when the buyer already owns suitable accessories and the exact unit is complete and clean.
Waterproof claims require the same discipline as drone claims
DJI lists both cameras for up to 20 m without the Waterproof Case and up to 60 m with the case, subject to the stated closure and product conditions. That means Action 6 is not a shortcut to a broader waterproof claim. Before underwater use, check seals, battery compartment and USB-C cover condition, lens-cover condition and the exact case supplied.
The Action 6 manual specifically warns that the product is not waterproof with the Osmo Action 6 Macro Lens. A used-kit seller should name any lens or accessory fitted to the camera rather than letting a general action-camera label imply an unsupported configuration.
Accessories and storage are part of the camera decision
The available internal storage differs slightly: Action 5 Pro lists 47 GB available and Action 6 lists 50 GB available from the same nominal 64 GB. Both support microSD storage under DJI's documented conditions. For high-volume shooting, the condition and speed class of the supplied card may matter as much as the small internal-storage difference.
Verify the exact camera body, battery, quick-release adapter, protective covers, waterproof case and memory card. Do not assume an accessory fits merely because it has an Osmo name; use the current official compatibility record for the exact device.
Before buying a pre-owned kit
Inspect the lens protective cover, side covers, battery compartment, USB-C cover, quick-release slots, screens and microphone/heat-dissipation openings. Water history should never be inferred from a clean front photo.
The current Shopify product inventory should be checked separately. This comparison is an editorial decision guide and does not imply that either exact camera is currently stocked by Reboot Hub.
Specification basis

Questions buyers ask
What is the clearest documented Action 6 upgrade?
Action 6 lists a 1/1.1-inch sensor and a variable f/2.0-f/4.0 aperture, while Action 5 Pro lists a 1/1.3-inch sensor and f/2.8 lens. Whether that matters depends on the planned shooting workflow.
Are both cameras waterproof to the same published depth?
DJI lists both for 20 m without the Waterproof Case and 60 m with the case under stated conditions. Covers, seals, the exact accessory and inspection state still matter.
Can I use an Action 6 Macro Lens underwater?
No. The Action 6 manual says the product is not waterproof when used with the Osmo Action 6 Macro Lens.
