DJI Air 3 vs Air 3S: Camera Upgrade & Equipment Reuse

Keep or choose Air 3 when its dual-camera output already meets your brief. Choose Air 3S for the larger wide-camera sensor, 4K120 slow motion, 42 GB storage or a specific newer shooting feature. Air 3 already has a separate 70 mm camera, omnidirectional vision sensing and Waypoint Flight. The newer aircraft is an upgrade to that system, not the introduction of those capabilities.

What changes, and what stays familiar

  • DJI Air 3

    Wide camera
    1/1.3-inch, 48 MP; 24 mm-equivalent f/1.7 lens.
    Medium tele
    1/1.3-inch, 48 MP; 70 mm-equivalent f/2.8 lens.
    Recording & storage
    4K100 slow motion, 8 GB internal storage and 10-bit D-Log M/HLG.

A reason to keep it: an established two-camera kit whose files and supported accessories already suit your work.

  • DJI Air 3S

    Wide camera
    1-inch, 50 MP; 24 mm-equivalent f/1.8 lens.
    Medium tele
    1/1.3-inch, 48 MP; 70 mm-equivalent f/2.8 lens.
    Recording & storage
4K120 slow motion, 42 GB internal storage and 10-bit 4K Normal recording.

A reason to upgrade: a specific wide-camera, recording or file-transfer requirement, with the reusable equipment checked separately.

Reviewed 6 September 2026 using DJI Air 3 User Manual v1.6, Air 3S User Manual v1.0, model-specific parameter records and official support documents. This is a source-based buying comparison, not a Reboot Hub image-quality or flight test.

Spend on the wide camera only when it changes your work

The most obvious hardware change is the Air 3S wide camera's 1-inch sensor, compared with the Air 3's 1/1.3-inch sensor. The change from 48 MP to 50 MP is not the whole story. Both wide lenses are described as 24 mm equivalent, while their apertures differ: f/1.7 on Air 3 and f/1.8 on Air 3S. Neither one number nor the newer model name proves how an individual used camera performs.

The medium-tele specification remains 1/1.3-inch, 48 MP and 70 mm-equivalent f/2.8. That does not establish identical processing or guarantee interchangeable camera hardware. It does mean an Air 3 owner already has a dedicated longer-lens option. For a photographer mainly delivering medium-tele compositions, "now with two cameras" is not a valid reason to upgrade.

There is a smaller but useful focus distinction: the Air 3 wide camera lists a 1 m minimum focus distance; Air 3S lists 0.5 m. Both medium-tele references start at 3 m. When reviewing a used unit, compare original files captured at suitable distances for each lens. Do not judge tele-camera sharpness from a close-up demonstration designed for the wide camera.

Build the decision around deliverables: wide establishing images, medium-tele details, vertical edits or slow-motion inserts. Ask for the relevant original files, including the recording settings. Then inspect focus consistency, visible defects and whether your editing process handles the footage. This is more useful than assuming that a sensor specification proves cleaner shadows or better color in every scene.

Air 3's long lens already has a firmware-added panorama mode

A source discrepancy matters here. The Air 3 FAQ still gives a negative answer for medium-tele panorama, but User Manual v1.6's camera matrix specifies sphere panorama on that camera. DJI's release notes dated 21 December 2023 record its addition in aircraft firmware v01.00.10.00, with DJI Fly v1.12.4 or later required for added features. The blanket statement "Air 3 telephoto cannot shoot panoramas" is therefore unsuitable for an updated aircraft.

Air 3S adds Free panorama on both cameras, allowing a selected shooting range. That is a more precise upgrade distinction than saying all panorama functionality is new. A buyer planning a particular stitched view should check the actual mode, aircraft firmware and app version. See the Air 3 manual and release notes and Air 3S feature FAQ.

The older Air also already supports saved Waypoint Flight and Cruise Control. If repeatable viewpoints or a steady stick-input route are the purpose of the purchase, first check the existing Air 3 functions against that brief. A saved route does not prove the surroundings remain clear on a later visit; the manuals still require obstacle settings and the environment to be checked.

4K120 is different from 4K100, but neither is ordinary playback

Air 3 lists 4K100 and 1080p200 slow-motion capture; Air 3S lists 4K120 and 1080p240. The Air 3's 4K100 setting requires H.265, while Air 3S specifies H.265 for its 4K recordings and slow-motion modes. Check the delivered clip and intended timeline instead of treating those capture rates as a description of every exported video.

Normal color recording also differs. Air 3's parameter record lists 8-bit Normal recording and 10-bit D-Log M/HLG. Air 3S lists 10-bit Normal, HLG and D-Log M at 4K in H.265. This can matter to an editor working outside log mode, but it does not eliminate exposure or color-management decisions. Open a sample in the software and hardware that will actually finish the job.

For vertical work, both cameras on both aircraft support 1512 x 2688 video, described as 2.7K, up to 60fps. Air 3S is not a move to a physically rotating portrait camera. If that camera movement is central to your brief, compare the Mini 5 Pro and Air 3S rather than assuming the S suffix resolves it.

The file-transfer distinction is wireless sleep access

Air 3 has 8 GB of internal storage and Air 3S has 42 GB. The extra 34 GB is useful temporary capacity when a card is unavailable; it is not a second copy of footage. Request an internal recording and export check for the selected aircraft, and build a verified offload into the trip before erasing media.

Both manuals allow exporting files to a computer through a data cable without powering on the aircraft. That wired capability should not be advertised as exclusive to Air 3S. The Air 3S distinction is its QuickTransfer sleep setting for wireless access from a mobile device after shutdown. Its manual explains that the sleep window ends after 12 hours of inactivity or a battery replacement.

Air 3's documented phone QuickTransfer workflow starts by powering on the aircraft. For either model, a charging-only USB cable is not a file-transfer solution, and a controller's cached image is not necessarily the original camera file. Test the export route you intend to use, not just the ability to see a thumbnail.

Several Air 3 accessories carry over, with one battery catch

DJI confirms that Air 3 low-noise propellers, its charging hub and its Intelligent Flight Battery can be used with Air 3S. However, an Air 3 battery disables the Air 3S Off-State QuickTransfer feature. That limitation matters when wireless sleep access is part of the reason to upgrade. The official compatibility FAQ is the basis for this reuse statement, not physical resemblance.

Do not extend that list to every fitted accessory. Camera filters, gimbal protection and other shaped components need their own model-specific confirmation. An existing bag also needs a practical fit check, including installed protection and packed batteries. The fact that an aircraft fits in a compartment does not prove a tight accessory is safe around its camera.

RC 2 is documented for both models. DJI's current controller-linking guide also lists Air 3 and Air 3S for RC-N2 and RC-N3. For RC-N2 or RC-N3, connect a phone running the latest DJI Fly, select Air 3S in Connection Guide, complete any prompted controller firmware update and then link. For RC 2, complete the aircraft and controller updates offered by DJI Fly and confirm successful linking before pricing an aircraft-only upgrade. The older Air 3 FAQ's launch-controller list should not be treated as the complete current answer.

Goggles users have a reason to pause before upgrading

The DJI goggles compatibility chart reviewed on 6 September 2026 marks Goggles 3, Goggles 2 and Goggles Integra compatible with Air 3, but incompatible with Air 3S. An existing Air 3 viewing setup should not be assumed to transfer just because both aircraft use O4.

Compatibility also comes with operating limits. For Air 3 with Goggles 3, the chart excludes camera switching and intelligent modes such as Waypoint Flight. Confirm the complete goggles, control device, firmware and recording mode. A supported headset does not preserve the entire normal two-camera workflow.

Neither weight nor advertised endurance transforms the travel category

The takeoff-weight references are 720 g for Air 3 and 724 g for Air 3S. Folded dimensions without propellers are 207 x 100.5 x 91.1 mm and 214.19 x 100.63 x 89.17 mm respectively. These are similar-sized travel systems. The upgrade is not a move into an ultralight aircraft category, and actual package weight also includes the controller, power and protection.

Published maximum flight times are 46 and 45 minutes. Air 3's reference test uses 28.8 km/h with APAS and AirSense off; Air 3S uses 32.4 km/h with obstacle avoidance set to Brake. Both have additional manufacturer test conditions. That one-minute difference cannot establish which used kit will provide more usable flight time on your route.

Air 3 already has omnidirectional vision sensing. Air 3S adds forward LiDAR, but a forward sensor is not a substitute for effective vision in every direction. Its manual warns about low-reflectivity objects, glass and difficult vision surfaces. Do not turn a night-sensing feature into an all-weather or collision-free promise. We have not performed a controlled wind or low-light avoidance test for this comparison.

Separate an upgrade budget from a replacement budget

  1. Keep or buy Air 3
    1. Its wide and medium-tele files already satisfy the brief.
    2. Your required panorama mode exists on the installed firmware.
    3. Your documented controller or goggles setup remains useful.
  2. Choose Air 3S
    1. The larger wide sensor or newer recording mode solves a named need.
    2. Storage or wireless sleep transfer changes your workflow.
    3. The reusable kit and any lost accessory features have been checked.

An owner can price an aircraft change plus only the confirmed missing equipment. A first-time buyer must compare complete offers: controller, working batteries, charging hardware and protective items. Do not compare a body-only price with a photographed multi-battery bundle as if the difference is solely the camera upgrade.

For either used model, inspect both lenses, gimbal movement, arms, sensing windows, contacts and available battery-condition records. Match functional evidence to the camera and export modes that matter to you. Review the Reboot Hub Standard and warranty policy with the selected listing. No fixed price, universal bundle or identical test scope is implied here.

Current Air kit options

Listing options checked 3 October 2026. These examples use the Pristine Pre-owned cosmetic grade. Open the listing for its current price and confirm the selected option before checkout.

Still to confirm: the battery model and quantity for controller or Fly More packages, charging hub, USB power adapter, phone/data cables, case and recording card. The current descriptions leave these to exact-package confirmation. Obtain an itemized list before comparing a ready-to-fly total; cosmetic grade alone does not establish battery health, installed firmware or successful pairing.

Before replacing an Air 3

Can the Air 3 medium-tele camera shoot a panorama?

Yes, sphere panorama is documented in User Manual v1.6. Release notes record its addition in aircraft firmware v01.00.10.00, with DJI Fly v1.12.4 or later required for the added features. Check the installed versions.

Can I reuse an Air 3 battery in Air 3S?

DJI confirms compatibility, but that battery disables Air 3S Off-State QuickTransfer. Check the exact battery and which transfer workflow you need.

Will my Air 3 Goggles 3 setup transfer to Air 3S?

No compatibility should be assumed. DJI's chart reviewed on 6 September 2026 marks Goggles 3 compatible with Air 3 and incompatible with Air 3S.

Is exporting by USB with the aircraft off new to Air 3S?

No. Both manuals document computer export through a data cable without powering on the aircraft. Air 3S wireless QuickTransfer in sleep is a separate feature with its own conditions.
