DJI Mini 4K vs Mini 3: Camera, Vertical Video & Value

Choose Mini 4K for straightforward landscape 4K footage. Choose Mini 3 for a larger sensor, a brighter lens and a camera that rotates for portrait recording. Both stop at 4K/30fps. Mini 3 is not Mini 3 Pro, and neither model adds forward obstacle avoidance.

Same 4K ceiling, different camera choices

  • DJI Mini 4K

    Camera and lens
    1/2.3-inch CMOS, 12 MP; 24mm-equivalent f/2.8.
    Recording
4K at 24/25/30fps; up to 60fps at 2.7K or Full HD.
    Composition
Landscape capture; vertical delivery requires reframing or cropping.

Buy it for: daylight travel clips and horizontal videos when a documented, complete kit costs less. The 4K name describes recording resolution, not a larger camera than Mini 3.

  • DJI Mini 3

    Camera and lens
    1/1.3-inch CMOS with 12 MP and 48 MP photo modes; 24mm-equivalent f/1.7.
    Recording
    4K at 24/25/30fps; HDR video at 24/25/30fps.
    Composition
Physical camera rotation for landscape or portrait capture.

Buy it for: portrait-first filming, more photographic flexibility and the option of a DJI RC screen controller. Those are concrete differences even though its name does not contain "4K."

Vertical recording changes the composition

Mini 3's gimbal rotates the camera into portrait orientation. For a tall building, waterfall or a person in a vertical scene, you can compose for that shape during capture instead of removing both sides of a horizontal frame later. This is the strongest reason to pay more when most finished work is 9:16. It also makes it easier to judge the intended framing while recording.

Mini 4K: crop to portraitKeep the subject inside the narrower output area.

Mini 3: rotate the cameraCompose vertically before pressing record.

Aspect-ratio illustration, not sample footage or a measured field-of-view comparison.

A centred 9:16 crop using the full height of a 3840 x 2160 landscape recording leaves 1215 x 2160 pixels. That can still supply a 1080 x 1920 vertical edit before other crops or stabilization, so Mini 4K is not incapable of producing vertical content. The trade-off is the lost horizontal area and reduced freedom to reposition the crop. Frame the subject deliberately; do not assume an editor can recover material outside the recorded view.

Mini 3 also has a controllable upward gimbal tilt of +60 degrees. Mini 4K reaches +20 degrees only when extended upward rotation is enabled; its default stops at level. Upward composition is therefore another model-specific difference, separate from resolution. These angles do not make close flying around structures safe: camera movement and obstacle detection are different systems.

What the larger sensor does, and does not, promise

Mini 3 combines the larger sensor with an f/1.7 lens, compared with f/2.8 on Mini 4K. That gives a buyer a sound camera-related reason to consider it, particularly when working beyond bright midday scenes. It is not evidence that every Mini 3 photograph will be sharper, cleaner or better exposed. Lens condition, settings, subject movement and processing still matter. Neither lens has an adjustable aperture.

For stills, Mini 3 offers a separate 48 MP mode alongside 12 MP shooting. Mini 4K records 12 MP photographs. Both support JPEG and DNG RAW. Do not describe the 48 MP label as four times the real detail in every scene, or mistake it for a 48 MP video mode. On a used Mini 3, check the current camera menu and an original file from the mode you intend to use.

For video, both models list a maximum bitrate of 100 Mbps and a 4K ceiling of 30fps. Moving to Mini 3 does not unlock 4K/60fps. Its HDR support applies at 24/25/30fps, while its 48/50/60fps options are at lower resolutions. DJI's Mini 3 FAQ explains that HDR is enabled by default at 30fps or below. Decide whether portrait composition and that recording workflow matter more than buying a less expensive 4K kit.

31, 38 and 51 minutes are three different references

The Mini 4K manual quotes 31 minutes while flying at 17 kph in windless conditions. Mini 3 quotes 38 minutes with its standard Intelligent Flight Battery at 21.6 kph in windless conditions. These are manufacturer maximum-flight-time tests at different speeds, not a Reboot Hub side-by-side endurance trial. The seven-minute gap must not be presented as seven extra minutes of filming from every pre-owned battery.

Mini 3's 51-minute figure belongs to the Intelligent Flight Battery Plus, not the standard battery. The reviewed manual lists about 290 g for that configuration, compared with 248 g for the standard aircraft. Plus availability also varies by market. An offer advertising both "under 249 g" and "51 minutes" without separating the battery configurations is leaving out a purchasing detail.

For a real day out, establish the number and type of batteries supplied, their documented condition and the charging equipment you will carry. Two advertised kits with different battery counts are not directly comparable by aircraft price. Keep return and landing reserve in the plan; neither published maximum is an appropriate target for using a battery to depletion in normal filming.

The controller can change the value of the offer

Mini 4K's manual identifies DJI RC-N1 and RC-N1C package variants. Both use a phone for the DJI Fly view, and they look alike; the manual nevertheless gives different controller-runtime figures. Ask for the model label rather than treating any grey DJI remote as the same item. Confirm the correct phone cable and a working device connection.

For Mini 3, the reviewed manual and DJI's compatibility FAQ name DJI RC-N1 and DJI RC. DJI RC has a built-in 5.5-inch screen. A Mini 3 package with that controller is a different offer from an aircraft-only listing or an RC-N1 package. Do not substitute DJI RC 2, RC-N2 or RC-N3 merely because their names are similar.

A screen controller can remove the phone-mounting step, but it does not upgrade the aircraft's recording resolution or its transmission generation. Both aircraft use O2/OcuSync 2.0 with a 720p/30fps live view. The controller display resolution, transmitted preview and video saved by the camera are three separate specifications. Confirm successful linking and recording on the exact combination being sold.

Compare complete-kit cost, not the headline price

  1. Normalize the contents. List the aircraft, named controller, flight batteries, charging equipment, phone cable, propellers and protective items. Add the cost of anything you actually need but would have to buy separately. "Fly More" is not a substitute for an itemized contents list.
  2. Verify the camera feature you are paying for. For Mini 3, ask for portrait/landscape switching and original photo or video evidence relevant to your chosen mode. For Mini 4K, verify a saved 4K clip rather than only a phone preview. A sample from a different aircraft cannot establish the condition of the unit you will receive.
  3. Include recording storage. Both rely on a microSD card for onboard recordings rather than a usable internal video-storage allocation. Mini 4K's manual specifies UHS-I Speed Grade 3 or better; use the current model-specific recommended-card list for either aircraft. Confirm whether a card is included and that a recorded file opens correctly.
  4. Read the order-specific evidence and terms. Use the Reboot Hub Standard to understand the documentation approach, then check the applicable warranty policy. Battery observations, cosmetic grading and any limitations should refer to the selected unit, not this model comparison.

If both complete kits are similarly priced and documented, Mini 3 gives you specific extra camera options. If Mini 4K is materially cheaper and your finished work is landscape 4K, the saving may be more useful than portrait rotation or a screen controller. There is no honest universal price premium to quote without current offers in the same currency and with comparable contents.

Current Mini kit options

Listing options checked 3 October 2026. The examples below use the same Pristine Pre-owned cosmetic grade. Open the listing for its current price and confirm the selected option before checkout.

  • Keep your existing equipment

Mini 4K: Drone Only (No Battery) (DJIWRJ23-2)
Mini 3: Drone Only (No Battery) (DJIMINI3-2)

Both options explicitly exclude the battery and controller. Choose this route only after checking that your own battery, controller and charging setup fit the exact model.

  • Use a phone with RC-N1

    Mini 4K: Drone with RC-N1 (DJIWRJ23-4)
    Mini 3: Drone with RC-N1 (DJIMINI3-4)

Both options name RC-N1. Match the phone cable and confirm the battery quantity and charging equipment supplied with each offer.

  • Choose a built-in screen

Mini 3: Drone with RC (DJIMINI3-6)

This Mini 3 option names DJI RC. The current Mini 4K listing offers Drone Only and RC-N1 packages, with no screen-controller package listed. DJI RC and DJI RC 2 are different controllers.

  • Compare Fly More options

    Mini 4K: Fly More Combo (RC-N1) (DJIWRJ23-6)
    Mini 3: Fly More Combo (RC-N1) (DJIMINI3-8)

The matching controller names help narrow the choice. Confirm the actual battery count and charging contents before comparing the bundles.

Still to confirm: the battery model and quantity for controller or Fly More packages, charging hub, USB power adapter, phone/data cables, case and microSD card. The current descriptions do not itemize these for each option, so a complete ready-to-fly cost cannot yet be compared. Ask for a written contents list and the selected unit's condition and battery evidence.

Neither is an obstacle-avoidance upgrade

Both manuals describe downward positioning systems. Mini 3 should not inherit Mini 3 Pro's sensing claims because of a similar name or body shape. If forward obstacle detection is a requirement, neither model meets it. Downward positioning also depends on suitable surfaces and lighting; it is not a promise of reliable hovering above every surface.

DJI lists the same 10.7 m/s maximum wind-resistance figure for both. That is not a recommendation to launch at the limit or proof of identical footage in gusts. Choose conditions and a route with adequate margins. Likewise, a Mini name or a standard weight below 250 g does not settle registration, location or operating requirements for the configuration and destination you intend to use.

Questions before choosing

Does Mini 3 record higher-resolution video than Mini 4K?

Both record up to 4K at 30fps. Mini 3's differences include its larger 1/1.3-inch sensor, f/1.7 lens, portrait camera rotation and HDR video at 24/25/30fps. It does not add 4K/60fps.

Can Mini 4K make vertical videos?

Yes, by cropping or reframing its landscape recording. It does not rotate its camera into portrait orientation like Mini 3. A centred 9:16 crop from 3840 x 2160 leaves 1215 x 2160 pixels before any other cropping.

Does every Mini 3 package provide 51 minutes of flight time?

No. The published 51-minute maximum uses the Intelligent Flight Battery Plus in specified test conditions. The standard battery figure is 38 minutes. The Plus configuration weighs about 290 g, and battery availability varies by market.

Which screen controller is documented for Mini 3?

DJI's reviewed sources name DJI RC, alongside the phone-based DJI RC-N1. Do not assume DJI RC 2 or another similarly named controller is interchangeable. Verify the exact included controller and successful pairing.
