DJI Goggles 3 vs Goggles 2: Aircraft Fit & Upgrade Value

Choose Goggles 3 for Real View or a supported newer aircraft; keep Goggles 2 for its wider view and an existing compatible kit. Both support O4 Air Unit equipment with updates. Check the controller before upgrading.

Start with the aircraft, then choose the controller

A newer headset is not a universal replacement for an older one. Check DJI's current compatibility matrix before paying for an upgrade. Its current entries give Goggles 2 routes for original Avata, DJI FPV, Mini 3 Pro and Mavic 3 Series that Goggles 3 does not support. Conversely, Goggles 3 supports Neo, Neo 2 and Avata 360, where Goggles 2 does not. Neither is listed for Air 3S, Mini 5 Pro, Mavic 4 Pro or Flip. Similar aircraft names are not interchangeable.

  • You fly Avata 2

    1. Both headsets have an official route.
    2. Goggles 3 pairs with RC Motion 3 or FPV Remote Controller 3.
    3. Goggles 2 pairs with RC Motion 2 or FPV Remote Controller 2. Do not reuse a controller solely because both kits fly Avata 2.
  • You fly Air 3 or Mini 4 Pro

    1. Both headsets are documented, with different firmware and controller requirements.
    2. The Goggles 3 document includes RC Motion 3, RC 2 and RC-N2 routes.
    3. The Goggles 2 compatibility document specifies RC Motion 2. Read the camera-function limits before buying.

The Avata 2 combinations above are from DJI's current linking guide. Decide whether you want motion control or a two-stick FPV controller, then price the complete compatible setup. A cheap headset is not a cheap conversion if you must replace the controller too. Do not treat a controller included in another model's bundle as proof of compatibility.

For Air 3 and Mini 4 Pro, the Goggles 3 compatibility document matters beyond the device names. Its minimum aircraft versions are Air 3 v01.00.1200 and Mini 4 Pro v01.00.0400, with separate goggles and controller requirements. Update the complete system, not just the headset.

That route also changes what you can shoot. The document excludes camera switching on Air 3 and portrait mode on Mini 4 Pro, alongside several intelligent modes. Its listed shooting options are single 12MP photos and normal video at 4K/60fps or 1080p/60fps. When using the supported RC 2 or RC-N2 route, the goggles receive the live image; DJI Fly does not show it simultaneously. A familiar controller therefore does not mean the familiar shooting interface remains unchanged.

Firmware history explains why launch-era comparisons can mislead. Goggles 3 gained O3 Air Unit support in July 2024, Neo in September 2024, O4 Air Unit support in January 2025, Neo 2 in October 2025 and Avata 360 in March 2026. Goggles 2 also gained O4 Air Unit and O4 Air Unit Pro support in January 2025. An air unit is a separate compatibility decision from a complete DJI aircraft; confirm its firmware and control arrangement rather than using an O3/O4 label as a shortcut.

Real View is a useful feature, not a new flight display

Goggles 3 has two forward cameras that show your immediate surroundings without removing the headset. The manual describes switching into Real View by double-tapping the right side of the goggles, with another control option through the motion controller. Goggles 2 has no equivalent cameras.

There is an important limit to the picture-in-picture mode: its small aircraft image is for checking aircraft status, not for flying by that inset. The manual also says the inset cannot be displayed while Real View is set to 3D. Assess this feature as a way to check nearby objects or your setup, not as an unrestricted mixed-reality flight system.

The latency headline needs the same care. DJI specifies a minimum 24 ms at 1080p/100fps for Goggles 3 with Avata 2, and 40 ms at 1080p/60fps. The original Goggles 2 references are 30 ms and 40 ms at those respective transmission settings. These are manufacturer reference conditions, not a Reboot Hub side-by-side measurement, and they do not establish the difference on every shared aircraft or air unit.

Do not pay for a supposed universal six-millisecond improvement. First identify your aircraft and available mode. Display refresh rate, transmission frame rate, recorded video and end-to-end responsiveness describe different things. The shared maximum 100 Hz display specification does not make every recording 100fps, and a later air-unit pairing must be checked against that system's own documentation.

Fit, prescription and battery weight change the upgrade calculation

Goggles 2 has the wider specified view at 51 degrees versus 44 degrees. Both use dual 1080p micro-OLED screens, but that does not prove identical perceived sharpness. How the optics align with your eyes, edge visibility and actual screen condition all matter. Neither the larger field of view nor the newer product name settles comfort for every wearer.

Both offer a 56-72 mm IPD range. Goggles 2's built-in diopter dials reach -8.0 D; Goggles 3's reach -6.0 D. However, Goggles 3 includes a separate -2.0 D corrective-lens route in its manual, so the built-in range is not its entire correction capability. With those inserts fitted, the displayed dial value and effective correction differ. Check the actual lenses and frames supplied with a pre-owned kit. For astigmatism or other unmet requirements, DJI describes an optician-made lens route; do not assume ordinary glasses will fit inside either headset.

The weight comparison needs the power supply included. Adding Goggles 2's approximately 290 g headset and 122 g external battery gives about 412 g before cable and other accessories. Goggles 3 is approximately 470 g with its battery included. The component-reference difference is therefore about 58 g, not a 180 g saving for the complete carried setup. These are calculations from published component weights, not weighed ready-to-use kits.

Goggles 2 still lets you keep the external pack off your head. Goggles 3 integrates the battery into the headband and uses a forehead pad to distribute the load. Inspect fit and adjustment, rather than assuming the lighter carried total must feel better. The Goggles 3 manual warns that wires run inside the headband: pulling it forcefully is not a suitable inspection method.

DJI's runtime references are approximately three hours for Goggles 3 and two hours for Goggles 2. The test settings differ, and the Goggles 3 test has Real View and Head Tracking switched off. Those figures do not promise the same endurance from a used battery. Ask about the recorded operating check, charging behaviour and included power equipment for the particular listing.

Controls, audio and sharing are different workflows

Goggles 3 uses a physical 5D button and back button; Goggles 2 uses a touch panel. Test menu navigation and return actions on the actual unit. Goggles 3's AR Cursor is a separate feature requiring RC Motion 3, not a feature unlocked by any controller with a similar name.

For media playback, do not buy the same headphone adapter for both without checking it. Goggles 3 has no speaker and requires supported USB-C headphones or an adapter with a built-in DAC. Goggles 2 has a 3.5 mm audio port; DJI's support FAQ also describes its speaker for stored-video or casting audio. This does not provide live sound from the drone in flight.

Goggles 3 can share the liveview to one phone through a cable or Wi-Fi. The manual describes sharing pausing when the pilot enters Real View, and wireless sharing being unavailable where the required 5.8 GHz use is prohibited. Check your intended phone workflow before a session. Playing or casting a film into a headset and sharing the aircraft view out to a phone are different directions of use.

Check the parts of the kit that change its real cost

  1. Optics and fit hardware. Inspect both displays, lens surfaces, adjustment locks, pads and any corrective frames. Keep lenses out of direct sunlight; DJI warns of permanent screen damage.
  2. Power and navigation. For Goggles 2, confirm the separate pack and correct power cable. For Goggles 3, check charging, headband adjustment and the integrated battery assembly. Request the available functional record, not just exterior photographs.
  3. Aircraft and controller evidence. Match exact names and current firmware. Confirm what was linked and checked; a photograph of two devices together is not a pairing test.
  4. Package and coverage. Compare the selected listing's included items, condition notes and applicable warranty terms. The Reboot Hub Standard explains the evidence approach; it does not make every listing's accessories or battery condition identical.

Upgrade for a missing capability, not a generation number

A Goggles 2 owner with a working, comfortable kit should identify the specific problem an upgrade would solve: a different aircraft, integrated power, Real View, or a documented sharing workflow. A Goggles 3 buyer should first rule out losing support for an existing aircraft. Compare complete usable packages, including the correct controller and vision accessories. Paying more only makes sense when the selected kit delivers the capability you actually need.

Goggles 3 and Goggles 2 questions

Can Goggles 3 replace Goggles 2 for every drone?

No. Their aircraft lists overlap but are not identical. Verify the exact aircraft and controller combination; newer goggles do not automatically support older aircraft.

Are Goggles 2 limited to O3 Air Unit equipment?

No. DJI added O4 Air Unit and O4 Air Unit Pro support in January 2025. Confirm the complete air-unit and controller configuration and its required firmware.

Does the 290 g figure include the Goggles 2 battery?

No. The external battery adds approximately 122 g. Their published component weights total about 412 g before cable and accessories, compared with about 470 g including the Goggles 3 battery.

Can I use the Real View inset to fly?

No. DJI says the Real View PiP aircraft inset is for status information and must not be relied on for flight. It is not displayed simultaneously when Real View is set to 3D.
